The one LA28 ticket rule to remember until 2027
If you only take one thing from this page, make it this: according to LA28, there is no verified resale of Olympic tickets before 2027. In its August 21, 2026 announcement, the organizing committee said its official verified resale program will open in 2027, and that resale listings appearing elsewhere before then are not verified.
That matters a lot for basketball. The sport sits near the top of most fans’ wish lists, the 2026 drops sold through the bulk of the available inventory, and the next primary sale is not open yet. That combination creates exactly the conditions scammers look for: high demand, limited supply and a gap in the calendar. Anyone selling you “confirmed seats” for an Olympic basketball semi-final in Inglewood today is offering something LA28 does not recognize.
We are an independent guide, not affiliated with LA28, the IOC or FIBA, and we do not sell or resell tickets. This page is here to help you avoid losing money.
What LA28 official ticket resale will look like
Here is what LA28 has said about its resale program, and what it has not.
LA28 resale: confirmed
- The verified resale program opens in 2027.
- It will run through LA28’s Official Secondary Ticket Marketplace, through AXS and Eventim (LA28’s ticketing service providers), and through verified resale platforms.
LA28 resale: reported by the press
- Ticketmaster and SI Tickets have been reported in the press as additional official resale platforms.
LA28 resale: not yet published
- The opening date of resale in 2027.
- Resale fees for buyers and sellers.
- Whether prices will be capped, and at what level.
- The rules for transferring tickets to another person.
Until those rules are public, treat any claim about them with caution, including claims that tickets “can be transferred freely” or “will be capped at face value.” We will update this page once LA28 publishes the details.
Speculative LA28 listings: selling seats nobody owns yet
One of the most common traps around big events is the speculative ticket: a listing for a seat the seller does not actually hold. The seller bets on buying it later, cheaper, and delivering it before the event. If that bet fails, the buyer is left with a refund at best, or nothing at worst.
California has moved against this practice. According to California press reports, Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 1349 in September 2026, a law that bans selling tickets the seller does not own and bans bot or circumvention software used to grab tickets. A proposed 10% cap on resale markups did not make it into the final law, and the coverage we saw did not mention any provision specific to LA28. In other words: the law helps, but it does not replace common sense.
A practical test: if someone offers LA28 basketball tickets with a specific section and row before LA28’s own resale is open, ask yourself how they could have that ticket in a form they can legitimately transfer to you. Usually, they cannot.
Red flags that should stop you from paying for LA28 seats
Scams around Olympic tickets tend to follow familiar patterns. Here are the warning signs we would treat as deal-breakers:
- “Guaranteed” seats before official resale exists. Nobody can guarantee a verified Olympic resale ticket before 2027.
- Payment by bank transfer, gift cards, cryptocurrency or a “friends and family” payment app. These methods are hard or impossible to reverse.
- Sellers on social media or messaging apps who send a screenshot or a PDF as “proof.” A picture of a ticket proves nothing.
- Websites that look official but are not. Check that you are on LA28’s own domain or on a provider LA28 names. Logos and colors are easy to copy.
- Emails or texts about a “draw win” or a “last-chance slot” that ask you to pay through a link. The 2026 draws are over, and the 2027 sale has no draw at all, according to LA28.
- Pressure. “Only two left, pay in ten minutes” is a sales tactic, not a fact.
- Specific matchups. An offer for a named matchup such as “USA vs. a specific rival on July 17” is fiction for now: groups and qualified teams are not set.
That last point deserves emphasis. As of October 9, 2026, only the USA is qualified in women’s basketball and the host place for the USA men is still formally subject to a FIBA decision in 2027. Tickets are sold by session, not by team. Our qualification page explains when the fields will be known.
LA28 hospitality packages are not resale
Some fans confuse premium packages with resale. They are different. LA28’s official hospitality provider is On Location, which has sold packages first-come, first-served since early 2026, including basketball and 3x3 options. Those are primary, official products sold at their set prices, not resale. If someone else is selling “Olympic basketball hospitality,” check whether it is actually On Location before paying.
If you bought LA28 tickets and can no longer go
If you secured basketball tickets in Drop 1 or Drop 2 and your plans change, the safest route is to wait for LA28’s verified resale in 2027. Listing your tickets on an unverified channel before that may conflict with LA28’s terms, which we cannot assess for you, and it exposes the buyer to risk. Keep your confirmation emails, check your LA28 account regularly, and watch for the official announcement of the resale opening.
Also note that LA28 says the 2027 first-come, first-served sale will release refreshed inventory across all sports. So a friend who missed out may be able to buy at face value directly from LA28, without any resale at all. Our ticket guide explains how that sale works.
If you think you have been scammed on LA28 ticket resale
Act quickly. Contact your bank or card issuer straight away and explain the situation; card payments are generally easier to dispute than transfers. Keep every message, receipt, listing and username. Report the seller to the platform where you found them, and report the fraud to the police or your local consumer-protection authority. If the scam used LA28’s name or branding, you can also flag it to LA28 through its official contact channels. Do not pay a second “recovery” fee to anyone who promises to get your money back: that is often a second scam.
Get told when official LA28 ticket resale opens
The best protection is simply knowing when the legitimate options open, so you are never tempted by the illegitimate ones. Our free alert sends an email when LA28 opens its verified resale in 2027, when the first-come, first-served primary sale opens, and when LA28 publishes new ticketing rules. We point only to the official LA28 channel, which you can always check on the LA28 ticketing page. We do not sell, resell or promise Olympic tickets.
